Sustainability Policies

  • This is a tour itinerary organized as a sustainable tourism program. We partner with local organizations to guarantee that visitors, entering into contact with non-touristic areas like Karamoja, will be able to come closer to people thanks to the mediation of local guides and will have a learning experience in the respect of the environment and the cultures.
  • For this reason, for the implementation of activities in Karamoja we partner with the local organizations and local guides, committed to sustainable tourism like Kara Tunga.

THE LODGES

  • In this program the lodges and hotels are very simple, immersed in the typical cultural context of Eastern Uganda.

Karamoja region

  • The region of Karamoja, in North-Eastern Uganda, has a surface of about 27,600 square kilometers, and a population (according to the last census of 2014) of about 1 million inhabitants. Administratively is dived in 8 Districts: Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk and Nakapiripirit. The capital city of the region is Moroto, with about 15,000 inhabitants.
  • The environment is mainly the typical “savannah”, with a few peripheral areas which are more fertile, and some mountains.

Karimojong people

  • Ethnically the inhabitants of Karamoja, called in general “Karimojong”, are Nilo-hamites, who entered in Karamoja about 400 years ago coming from Ethiopia. They were shepherds and warriors and easily overcame the previous inhabitants of Karamoja, who were mainly farmers, pushing them in the mountains, where they still live now (the Tepeth in Mount Moroto and Mount Napak and the Kadama in Mount Kadam).
  • Even today the majority of the Karimojong (about 80 %) live in a rural environment, in villages built with mud and wood, and with a traditional lifestyle. The Karimojong are agro pastoralist. They keep cattle mainly, but also goats, sheep, donkeys and camels. They also grow sorghum, maize, millet, vegetables, supplemented with wild fruits, mushrooms, and roots.
  • The Karimojong have an administrative system which keeps the tribe together. A council of male elders is the final decision maker.
  • During the itinerary you will experience a direct and true contact with some of the Karimojong tribes like the Tepeth, the Matheniko, Jie, Dodoth and IK.
