Tour Overview

Ngamba Island is found on Lake Victoria, approximately 23 km out of Entebbe. It consists of 100 acres, of which 98 are forested; the rest is kept for the camp, the lodge and all human activities. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was created in 1998 by Jane Goodall Institute in cooperation with other conservation organizations with the objective to provide a safe home to orphan chimpanzees’ victims of poaching and therefore displaced from their original forest habitat. This “emergency” project was necessary and it still plays an important role in chimpanzee conservation in Uganda. The Sanctuary later on became a private conservation institute with the name Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation (CSWCT). Today about 50 chimpanzees are living in the island. These are the main spots included in the Buganda Kingdom and Kampala City tour:

Kabaka’s Palace and Idi Amin’s Torture Chambers

A tour to the Kabaka’s palace takes to the history of one of Uganda’s strongest kingdoms. Built in 1922 on Mengo hill during the reign of the late King Ccwa II, this is where the King (Kabaka) of Buganda sits. The palace is just a mile from the Parliament of Buganda. At the gate is a traditional fire source that has never burnt out since the inception of the Buganda Kingdom and shall never stop burning least a king is dead. Along the road is a representation of all Buganda Clans and their respective role in this Kingdom since time immemorial as narrated by a royalist at this fire source. The architectural design of this building has proven a spectacular Uganda tour site. In the 1970s, Idi Amin built his torture chamber here, which saw the murder of over 100,000 people.

The Bulange Parliament

Bulange is the first modern parliament in East Africa open in 1956 and it serves as the main administrative seat in Buganda it is where the Lukiiko (Buganda Parliament) sits. It houses the offices of the Kabaka, Nnaabagereka (Queen), the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) and offices of other high-ranking officials in the Kingdom. The Buganda Lukiiko (Parliament) sits eight times a year but the Kabaka attends only once to close the previous session and to open the new session. In the foreground are flagpoles which at given occasions fly the flags of the 52 clans of the Kingdom of Buganda.

Kasubi Tombs

This site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initially established by the late (King) Kabaka Suuna II in 1852, it was reoccupied again in 1882 when the late King Muteesa I relocated to Nabulagala Hill and renamed it Kasubi after his birthplace. He constructed a large mausoleum called Muzibuazaalampanga (King is born by a King). Muteesa I died in 1884 and he was the first Kabaka to be buried with his jawbone intact in a casket that was made by the missionary Alexander Mackay. This site as it had been built by the late King Muteesa I using reeds, poles and thatch 130 years ago was on the 16th of March 2010 burnt down and reduced to ashes for unknown reasons.

Namirembe and Rubaga Cathedrals

Uganda is a religiously diverse nation with Christianity being the most widely professed religion.

Namirembe cathedral is for the Anglican and is located on the Namirembe hill offering an incredible view of the city. The Rubaga Catholic cathedral is located on one of Kampala’s many hills so views are exceptional as well great.

Gadaffi Mosque, Old Kampala

The Mosque is located in Old Kampala and is regarded as the largest in Africa, reputed to have enough space to accommodate 35,000 worshippers at any one time, offering unrivalled 360 degrees’ views of Kampala from the Minaret. While visiting the mosque, a few rules are to be followed especially concerning with dress code for both male and females.

Ba’hai Temple

The temple is situated on Kikaya Hill on the outskirts of Kampala, famous for the unique architecture, beauty and being the only one on the continent for the Ba’hai faith often referred to as the Mother Temple of Africa. The 127 ft temples sits on a fifty-acre property includes the House of Worship, extensive gardens, administrative center among others with a sitting capacity of 600, open to visitors from Monday to Sunday though on Sunday prayers start about 9:00am so joining the local community for a player maybe a good idea to learn and know about the Bahai faith.

Owino Market

A walk through one of Uganda’s largest open markets offers an experience like no other. Covering about 7 hectares and with about 300,000 customers visiting every day, today it has over 50,000 venders selling almost everything including clothes (new and second hand), traditional food, shoes, electronics, textile among others.

The staple food in Buganda is “matooke”, which is a type of banana. It is peeled, wrapped in banana leaves, tied up with banana fibre and then pressed and mashed to a form of mound
